At a time when other great houses were being demolished weekly, somehow our beloved Grange survived.
The house you see today begs many questions. This book answers them with 250 pictures.
Richard Osborne sews together a narrative bursting with magnificent people (a Lord Chancellor, the Prince Regent, Florence Nightingale), Piccadilly mansions, Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, the first photographs, splendid private yachts, the coming of the railways to Hampshire (Micheldever) and, of course, very attentive staff.
What was it like working in a house like that? On census night 1891 Lord Ashburton's great aunt aged 11 months was at The Grange alone with 23 servants plus 8 more in the stable buildings.
